2x NFL MVP points out major red flag in Caleb Williams’ play despite Bears QB resurgence under Ben Johnson

Caleb Williams is having a resurgence in his second NFL season, throwing for nearly 3,000 yards and 20 touchdowns against just six interceptions while leading the Chicago bones to a 9-4 record. However, despite his development under Ben Johnson, Kurt Warner is not convinced of his prospects for success.

On Thursday’s episode of The Athletic’s “Scoop City” podcast, the two-time MVP said:

“Caleb has to be more efficient at hitting the wings out there. When Ben creates the plays out there, whether it’s a read or a throw, and it’s what I would call an elementary level, … he has to do a better job of making those plays.

“If he doesn’t, he’s going to struggle against good football teams. When you have to play two or three of those teams, you can’t miss easy opportunities and think you’re going to make up for it.”

Another former MVP, Tom Bradycompared Williams’ accuracy issues to his own experiences on FS1’s “The Herd with Colin Cowherd”:

“The passing game is so important when you’re behind in games. . . . When you’re down 28-3, you better be extremely accurate because the windows are really tight. You’re going to have to throw 30, 40 passes in the second half and overtime against a myriad of different coverages.”

Bears OC expects more positive connections between Caleb Williams, DJ Moore

A player who has not benefited Caleb WilliamsThe presence so far is DJome Moeure is.

In 2023, the wide receiver had a career-high 1,364 yards and eight touchdowns in what turned out to be Justin FieldsLast season at Illinois. But when Williams arrived, he fell to 966 and six.

And in 2025, he’s only dropped more to 498 and three, including negative four yards on a single catch in last week’s 28-21 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Still, offensive coordinator Declan Doyle is confident in his utility for Williams, as he said Thursday:

“He’s a very explosive player with the ball in his hands. Obviously, now that I get to work with him, I really like the person. I like him, who’s in the building, but he’s a weapon when you use him, and you know, he’s done a good job. Every time we’ve asked him to go do something, he’s doing it.”

He continued:

“I think Caleb is doing a great job of doing what we’re asking him to do. We’re trying to build those plays to feed everybody. It just happens (that) there’s plays every game for all of our guys, and sometimes … he’s the lead and the coverage doesn’t dictate the ball goes there.

“And so those two guys are doing a good job of staying the course, and they’re going to continue to do that.”

Kickoff for the Bears-Browns game is at 12 pm CT on Fox.
