Indiana Fever fans are already recruiting Sophie Cunningham and Lexie Hull to continue their stint with Caitlin Clark in 2026. Both Fever guards are free agents; Cunningham is unrestricted, while Hull is restricted. Indiana had significant chemistry with both players in the locker room, but fans were unable to see success on the court due to injuries to Clark and Cunningham.
The Fever trio lined up on the golf course Wednesday for The Annika Pro-Am, and a fan asked Cunningham and Hull will re-sign next year ahead of Clark. According to Fever reporter Scott Agness, who was covering the event, Cunningham responded with a five-word message, saying:
“Tell them to pay us.”
He wasn't referring to the Fever, but to the WNBA amid the league's new ABC negotiations with the players association, which have been contentious, to say the least.
Negotiations have been ongoing for months and the two sides have not agreed on a settlement. Players want their salaries tied to league revenue, while the WNBA wants to cap player earnings at a fixed rate. The deadline for negotiations was October 31, but the parties agreed to extend it until November 30.
If the League and the players' association still can't agree on a deal, it will force a work stoppage.
Free agency will be about how the new CBA rules work. For now, players can only express what they intend to do when they are in a position to make decisions about their free agency. Sophie Cunningham and Lexie Hull have shared their perspectives on the issue.
During Fever's exit interviews in October, Hull he said loved his time here, but admitted his restricted free agency creates “uncertainty”:
“I'm a restricted free agent, which changes things a little bit, but I've loved my years here in Indiana. Obviously, with a lot of uncertainty, you don't know what's coming, but I've made a life here. I love this franchise. I love the people, the fans, so we'll see.”
Cunningham, meanwhile, would also like to return, but revealed that CBA negotiations have stalled his free agency talks with the Fever. That's what she he said on his podcast in October:
“Next year, I don't even know what it looks like…those talks haven't even been had because of the ABC, so it's been delayed a bit and whatnot.
“If Indiana got its core back, it would be a big deal.”
Sophie Cunningham and Lexie Hull have been cultural adjustments at Fever. They have also teamed up with Caitlin Clark on and off the court. Indiana's priority will be re-signing All-Star Kelsey Mitchell.
However, Cunningham and Hull certainly look to be next.
