The wife of a WWE Superstar recently revealed that she had had issues with Tony Khan after some of his past comments. He mentioned how this happened when they were both still affiliated with AEW.
I look and CJ Perry (AKA Rusev and Lana) were both with the Jacksonville-based promotion at one point in 2023. The Bulgarian brute spent roughly five years with the company, while his wife was only around for a few months. They even had a story between them, which never progressed.
While speaking to TMZ's inside the ring Perry mentioned that there was a running joke about having to plead the Fifth during interviews. This was due to instances where she accidentally went viral on social media for some of her comments, which she said infuriated Tony Khan.
“He needed to ask for the Fifth because he was doing too many interviews to make it viral. And then Tony Khan would call him and get mad (…) We do a radio interview at 6 in the morning in Wisconsin. This is not like anything in the media, this is just a little phone call, you know, 5:45 to like North Dakota. I love North Dakota. And the next few days, you know, it's trending on Twitter.”
One of them included her apparently hinting at it Rusev would return to WWE. Her husband then claimed that she was like a parrot as she would repeat everything he said. The interesting thing is that all of this ended up being true.
“And Rusev is coming back. I don't look at AEW, I look at Rusev. And it's because I was asked, 'Do you think he's ever going to come back to the Royal Rumble?' And I'm like, “Everybody's back in the WWE.” But I'm sorry. Like, and then the funniest thing is like Miro, “he's just a parrot.” She just repeats what I say. And it's true.” (H/T ITRWrestling)
Despite being Bulgarian, Rusev often showed support for Russia during his run as United States Champion in 2014. His wife and manager, Lana, was also Russian, so the duo often displayed the country's flag during their entrances and segments.
During the same interview with TMZ's Inside the RingCJ Perry revealed that Vince McMahon was the one who worked on his promos and at the time it seemed like he wanted to invite Vladimir Putin himself to come to a WWE show.
“Vince (McMahon) could identify more with Putin because you know, Vince is lifting 650 pounds, you know? At 75 he's squatting. It's like you're a maniac. I wanted Vladimir Putin to come to a show. It's like, 'I hope he comes,'” Lana said.
In his second run with WWE, Rusev has arrived with a new persona. This is very similar to his gimmick in AEW where he was known as The Redeemer. It remains to be seen how high he will go with this new character.
