The New York Knicks won this year’s NBA Cup after beating the San Antonio Spurs 124-113 on Tuesday. It is their first league title since winning the NBA championship in 1973.
However, the Knicks received one of their harshest criticisms Paul Pierce send a scathing message to the team, discrediting the team’s NBA Cup victory and stating that New York will never win a ring in their lifetime.
Thanks for sending!
“This is the only championship the Knicks will ever win,” said Pierce, a Boston Celtics legend. “They’re not going to win an NBA title in my lifetime.”

Pierce also noted that no NBA Cup champion has ever been to the Finals, leaving the Knicks with their odds stacked against them.
“All the teams that have won the NBA Cup have never been to the finals. That’s a fact,” he added.
The Knicks became the third team in history to win the N.B.A Cup, after the LA Lakers in 2023 and the Milwaukee Bucks in 2024.
The Knicks haven’t been to the Finals since 1999. However, last season was the closest since then as they reached the Eastern Conference Finals before ultimately losing to the Indiana Pacers. The Pacers then lost in the finals to the eventual NBA champion OKC Thunder.
New York backed OG Anunoby in the NBA Cup Finals with 28 points, while NBA Cup MVP Jalen Brunson had 15 markers.
The win earned each Knicks player about $500,000.
Winning the NBA Cup allows the New York Knicks to simulate pressure situations, just like the playoffs, according to their head coach, Mike Brown.
According to Brown, the NBA Cup gave teams a platform for their players at certain pressure points, which can only sharpen them for a potential playoff run.
“During the year, you try to find situations to put pressure on your group,” he said. “This is a single-elimination tournament when you get to a certain point. Every game counts.”
“There’s pressure in every game if you hope to be who you think you are.”
The win also adds to their regular season momentum as they currently sit in second place with an 18-7 record, just behind the top seed Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Conference.
