Saturday Night’s WWE Main Event saw John Cena have his final match in the industry as an in-ring performer against Gunther. According to a report, The Franchise Player’s plans were a little different.
Ahead of Saturday night’s main event, it was reported that the company would be devoting the first hour of the show to John Cena. The reports received strong backlash, with the 17-time WWE World Champion clearing the air about those rumors and speculations by stating that he was ready to shut down the show, which happened in Washington.

According to Dave Meltzer of the Combat Observer Bulletin (WON), the insider reported that Cody Rhodes vs. Oba Femi originally appeared to close the show instead of John Cena vs. Gunther. The report indicates that management had other plans for The Franchise Player, which would have been to compete earlier on the card instead of headlining the event.
Fortunately, management decided to close the show with John Cena and allowed him a proper farewell after his final match against Gunther.
John Cena’s final chapter in the industry as a performer ended in heartbreaking fashion when he smiled and tapped Gunther in the main event. While many questioned the booking behind the loss, Bubba Ray Dudley believes this is not the last appearance for the 48-year-old legend.

“One day, Cody Rhodes will come face-to-face with Gunther… When we get there, Gunther will have built himself up to a level where he’s going to be the unmovable object. He’s going to be THAT guy. Cody will have doubts, and Cody will have a problem with Gunther… One day, as a Force ghost, John Cena will return to Cody’s world, who will remember my righteous moment. That’s what I see happening,” Dudley said.
The men’s Grand Slam champion also appeared on Cody Rhodes’ podcast after his retirement in Washington.
