In 2011, Jeff Gordon Discussed what saw the disadvantages of the Nascar Chase format. The former Hendrick Motorsports pilot argued that victories in a season led to more weight than the persecution based only on points.
In 2010, Gordon endured a season without gain, but continued to compete in the persecution of his points. He finished his ninth in the standings, while drivers like Jamie McMurray could not qualify for the persecution, but won three Crown Jewel events in Daytona, Indianapolis and Charlotte.
Reflecting on the same, Gordon spoke to SB Nation in 2011 and said:
“If you talk about the Daytona 500 and Brickyard 400, I would rather have this season not to win the championship. For me, either win the championship or win a good handful of the biggest races.”
Jeff Gordon called him “disappointing” in such emblematic events. However, his 2011 season told a different story. He marked three wins and achieved the persecution, thanks to a new rule that allowed two wild card entries to the most winning pilots, took place 11 and 20 in points. He scored three better fifty in the post -season, but finally reduced to the championship and finished the eighth of the season at points.
Jeff Gordon recently shared his reasoning to never participate in Indy 500. While admitting that it was a major goal, he explained how Brickyard 400 fulfilled his desire to compete in Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
During a press conference for the weekend of the Day Memorial in Charlotte, Gordon talked about his aspirations for Indy 500 and said (Via x/Bob Pockrass, 0:45 onwards):
“I wanted to run there at the Indy 500. I really did it. But you know, the opportunity was not there. And I go south, and for me it was a nascar at that time … And the next I know, they are announcing the Mahón garden and this is when all the stars align.”
“Once I won in a brickyard 400, a kind of Indy 500, it didn't seem to be so important to me because I didn't think I could really win Indy 500, but I could win more bricks,” he added.
Jeff Gordon has won Brickyard 500 a record five times, the largest of any pilot. His last victory on the court arrived in 2014, when he broke the tie Jimmie Johnson For most wins in IMS. The Triumph is still its only Crown Jewel Win after 2010, while competing in its last season in the Cup in 2015.
Before, he had won three Daytona 500, three Coca-Cola 600s and six from the south of 500.
