The timeline for Jonathan Kuminga's recovery from an ankle injury became clearer on Friday.
According to Anthony Slater of the Athletics, the Golden State Warriors forward is “weeks away” from returning because his ankle is still wrapped and he hasn't progressed to “real court work.” Slater noted that Kuminga “could” return after the All-Star break.
The 22-year-old suffered a right ankle sprain against the Memphis Grizzlies on Jan. 4 and has missed each of Golden State's last 10 games.
The Warriors have struggled without Kuminga, owning a 4-6 record in that 10-game span.
Per Slater, the former lottery pick has been around the rest of the team as he recovers and is “in a positive mood.”
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr previously provided an update on Kuminga during Tuesday's appearance on 95.7 The Game's Willard and Dibs show.
“(Kuminga) is making progress, but it was a pretty bad ankle sprain and he hasn't been on the field or anything,” Kerr said (h/t Taylor Wirth NBC Sports Bay Area). “But he's going to rehab every day, he's doing strength work and he's on the bike, so he's doing as well as he can. But he's not even close to being ready.”
If Kuminga is sidelined until after the All-Star break, his first chance to return will be against the Sacramento Kings on February 21.
Despite alternating changes between the starting line-up and the bench, Kuminga has made an encouraging start to his 2024-25 campaign. In 32 appearances, he averaged 16.8 points and 5.0 rebounds per game while shooting 45.9 percent from the field and 34.5 percent from three-point territory.
Kuminga also owns the fourth-best net rating among Warriors players who have appeared in at least 25 games this season (over NBA.com).
Golden State has failed to build on a 12-3 record to start the year, is currently 22-22 and owns the 11th spot in the Western Conference standings.
As the Warriors try to get back on track, they may be without Kuminga until after the All-Star Game.
