Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney shared a personal story that stood out Connor McDavid's Nature in the Earth even when speculation revolves around the Edmonton Oilers The Captain's future.
Speaking in the “Oilers Now” podcast, Carney recalled how one of his colleagues ran into McDavid on the street. The colleague, who works for a deputy, asked for a photo with Oilers star, which Carney heard spoke of volumes about McDavid's character.
“He has a lot in his mind, he has a lot to do. And he is still the best player in the world, just walking down the street on a sunny afternoon in Edmonton,” said Carney.
McDavid enters the last year of his eight -year agreement and became eligible for an extension on July 1. He said his main focus is to win and that “all options are on the table”.
Meanwhile, Carney did not make any secret of his own loyalties. When asked if politicians should openly root a team, he laughed:
“Now it's too late, I'm clearly a fan of oilers. But I think you have to be authentic, you have to be who you are, and it doesn't make sense to pretend you to encourage each team equally.
“Obviously, I will encourage myself, if there are only one Canadian team left in the Playoffs of the Stanley Cup, I will encourage them, but whenever the oilers are, I encourage them.” Carney added.
The Oilers begin to train a camp on September 17 before the regular season begins at home against the Calgary flames on October 8.
Connor McDavid said that his next contract will be reduced to more dollars. Oilers captain admitted that it is to find the right mix between family priorities, reasonable value and end goal, winning the Cup Stanley.
“I have put everything I have in this game and, of course, I want to be paid fairly. But at the same time there is a salary lid and my only real focus is to win. Finding that balance is the challenge.” McDavid said after the practice of Oilers captain last week.
While his future is the timing issue around the NHL, Connor McDavid does not believe his contract distracts Edmonton this season.
He pointed out how the oilers have passed everything, coaching changes, front-offsmithing, hot stripes and harsh falls, but they always managed to stay locked up.
