Caroline Wozniacki recently hit out at a prominent Danish tennis commentator who questioned the former No. 1's potential return to the WTA Tour. Wozniacki is currently inactive, mainly because she gave birth to her and husband David Lee's third child earlier this year. However, the Dane has not confirmed her retirement from tennis or her return to the sport.
In 2020, Wozniacki officially retired, but in 2023 she returned to action as a mother of two. The Dane flashed back to her past brilliance after returning to the tour, but generally struggled to produce the kind of results that once helped her reach the top of the WTA Tour singles rankings and win 30 career singles titles, including the 2018 Australian Open.
According to Danish commentator Peter Bastiansen, Caroline Wozniackiwho is now 35 years old, it has been a long time and he should retire for good.
“I don't understand why she doesn't announce it. So what's the point of not doing it? She's never, ever going back to top tennis. That run is over. Why doesn't she say it? There's nothing wrong or unnatural about it. All the big sports stars announce things like that, so I don't get it.” Bastiansen told Danish tabloid newspaper BT (translated from Danish)
He also scoffed at the possibility of the former No. 1 making another comeback, adding:
“I will fall off my chair if she signs up for the Australian Open in January. It will be a travesty if she does. It will just be deeply frivolous. I don't see why the organizers are bothering to give her a wild card.” (translated from danish)
Wozniacki subsequently caught wind of what Bastiansen had to say about her, and the Dane, whose last competitive outing came at the 2024 US Open, lashed out at the commentator on Instagram. Accusing Bastiansen of continuously vilifying her in the Danish media for more than two decades, Wozniacki wrote:
“It's been over 20 years now that Peter Bastiansen has harassed me and attacked me in the media and talks about things he doesn't understand. Peter, you're a clown, and as a 'tennis expert' you have to know the rules. It can be hard to follow when you've never played at a high level.” (translated from danish)

After explaining that her automatically protected ranking allows her to enter the big tournaments in women's tennis, including the four Majors, without having to rely on wildcards handed out by events, Caroline Wozniacki continued:
“But I have a frozen ranking of world number 71, which means I don't need wildcards to get into the big tournaments.” (translated from danish)
He concluded by defending his right to make decisions about his professional tennis career based on the interests of his family generally by writing:
“After many years of hard training and top level tennis, I have the right to do what is best for my family.” (translated from danish)
Caroline Wozniacki's most recent competitive outing, at last year's US Open, was a fourth-round loss to Beatriz Haddad Maia.
