“Fantastic evolution of the LIV Golf product”

LIV Golf has announced some exciting new changes to its format as it heads into its fifth season. With players participating in 54-hole competitions from 2022, the league will now have all of its events played in the traditional 72-hole format.

Bryson DeChambeau acknowledged the Saudi league's efforts to align with golf's traditional format while praising it for being receptive to feedback from players and fans. The two-time Major Championship winner said (via LIV Golf):

“Everyone wants to see the best players in the world compete against each other, especially in the majors, and for the sake of the game, we need a way forward. By moving to 72 holes, LIV Golf is taking a proactive step to align with the historic, globally recognized format. This is a fantastic evolution of the LIV Golf product, showing how our League listens and adapts to the best possible experience.”

Claiming that LIV Golf is a “league of players”, Jon Rahm he said the move was a massive “win” for both his teammates and supporters. The two-time league singles champion claimed the 71-hole format would increase competition in the league while making it more entertaining for spectators.

Rahm said (via LIV Golf):

“This is a win for the League and the players. LIV Golf is a players' league. We are competitors to the core, and we want every opportunity to compete at the highest level and perfect our craft. Moving to 72 holes is the next logical step that strengthens the competition, tests us more fully and, if last season's growing galleries are any indication of what the fans want.”

Dustin Johnson supported Rahm and DeChambeau in their words. The 24-time PGA Tour winner said he missed playing tournaments that consisted of 72 holes of competition. He said (via LIV Golf):

“I think it's a great move for the League, and I'm excited for it. Playing 72 holes feels a little more like the big tournaments we all grew up playing. I've always liked the four-round game — it gives the best players a chance to rise to the top. LIV Golf has been a great experience from the start, and I think that makes it better for the fans.”

While all of the league's regular season tournaments will be played in the 72-hole format, the format for the Team Championship remains undecided and will be announced at a later date.
