Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is confident in his ability to win the MVP award.
“I'll win one, one day,” Burrow told reporters on Tuesday (1:13 mark).
He does not believe he will receive the honor for his 2024 season, however.
“I doubt it,” Burrow said. “You usually have to win your share.”
“It is what it is,” he said. “That's how they vote. It's not that I don't agree with it, I would say.”
The Bengals sit in third place in the AFC North with an 8-8 record. They are still alive in the hunt for the playoffs, but they must win in Week 18 and will need help to secure the final AFC postseason berth. The Denver Broncos and Miami Dolphins will also need to lose their Week 18 contests for Cincinnati to make the playoffs.
If the Bengals miss the postseason, it's hard to imagine the MVP award going to a player on a team that hasn't been able to get one of the conference's seven games. Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson and Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen, the other two candidates for the award, play for teams with a combined record of 24-8.
Burrow is still in the midst of a career year, however.
In 16 starts, the 28-year-old has completed 69.8 percent of his throws while leading all quarterbacks with 4,641 passing yards and 42 touchdowns in the air. Burrow averages 7.7 yards per attempt and has just eight carries.
Cincinnati's struggles in 2024 began with a defense that gave up 26.1 points per game and allowed sixth-most yards each week. The Bengals also failed to win close contests, posting a 3-7 record in games decided by one score.
If Cincinnati can win the AFC North title in 2025 while Burrow continues to excel, the former LSU standout will feel good about his MVP chances.
