'Best batsman at Wankhede': Mohammad Kaif trade suggestion to Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2026 retention deadline

old blender Mohammad Kaif made a commercial suggestion to the Bombay Indians (MI) before IPL 2026 Retention Deadline The IPL 2026 Auction Retention Deadline is November 15.

Prior to the same, there has been talk of a possible trade between the Bombay Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) involving wicketkeeper batsmen Ishan Kishan. The left-hander joined MI in 2018 and stayed with them till the 2024 season. He was acquired by SRH for the 2025 season.

Kishan used to open the batting during his stint at MI, while he had to bat at number three at SRH with Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head as openers. Mohammad Kaif has felt that the left-hander would be better at Wankhede and MI, where he has played before and done well. He also explained how this move could be beneficial for the five-time champions.

“Ishan Kishan is a better batsman in Wankhede. He will open if he plays in MI. In SRH he plays in three. There is a big difference. He does not have that advantage playing in three. Despite bringing him at a high price, SRH could not give him the right place because he is not available. Maybe Ishan is asking himself to go to Mumbai if there is a good option. Mumbai, if they can get Ishan, having a wicketkeeper and an Indian opener will give them the option play with another foreign player,” Mohammad Kaif said on his YouTube channel.

Ishan Kishan scored 2325 runs in 89 matches for MI at an average of 29.81 and a strike rate of 136.85. In 29 innings at the Wankhede, MI's home ground, he has scored 659 runs at a strike rate of 145.47.

Mohammad Kaif on the Shardul-Arjun trade between MI and LSG

Ahead of the IPL 2026 auction, another potential trade that is being talked about is that of Shardul Thakur from Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to MI in exchange for a left-arm quick. Arjun Tendulkar.

Mohammad Kaif outlined the possible reasoning behind MI looking to trade Shardul, if the deal went through. He figured they needed a third or fourth seamer who could also be used as a floater in the batting order.

“Shardul can be your third or fourth player. He's not a new player. He can't be your main driver. So that might be the only reason why Mumbai are asking him. They have Hardik, Bumrah and Boult, but they had a problem with third and fourth players last year. They tried a few new players. So if this deal goes well because W Sharan can score, he can only score with W Sharan. He can also do what Krunal did in this one field Maybe the plan is to get a third mower and a floating thresher.

Shardul has bagged 107 wickets from 105 IPL matches so far. He has also scored 325 runs at a strike rate of 139.48 with a half century. As for Arjun Tendulkar, Mohammad Kaif claimed that LSG might keep him in the squad but would not play him in the playing XI.

“If Arjun goes to LSG, they won't play him. They'll just have him in the squad and maybe groom him. Maybe groom him for the future. That's all.”

Arjun has had limited opportunities in the IPL so far. He has yet to establish himself on the biggest stage. He has played five matches with MI and has collected three pitches.
