The answer is that no, it is not necessary.
Why not require definitive editing of the Mafia before the Mafia is the old country?
The Old Country is a new arc of the series, built as a starting point for both new and returned players. It is established before the original game events, so nothing prevents you from jumping directly, even if you have not touched a single game of the Mafia before. The developers are clearly with the stage for something fresh, with the intention of returning to where everything began.
That said, the fans for a long time have played in the definitive Mafia and other games of the Mafia will capture certain returns (Easter eggs, family faces and subtle nods that enrich the experience.) These are not games or essentials for understanding the plot, but they will definitely be added to the experience if you already know the story of Tommy Angelo.

What brings the definitive editing of the Mafia to the table
Originally published in 2020 as a complete remake of the 2002 classic, Mafia Definition Edition, brings players to Lost Heaven streets, aimed at crime in the 1930's. Follow Tommy Angelo, a taxi driver who is trapped in the dangerous operation of the Salieri family.
The game takes its directions from Mafia III's updated mechanics, but it improves storytelling, visual and worldwide construction. He even introduced motorcycles in the series for the first time. There is a free walk mode dedicated to players who want to wander the city outside the main missions, explore hidden content and have an idea of the atmosphere.
Even if you touch the final autonomous edition or as part of the Mafia trilogy package, it serves as a solid introduction to the tone and themes of the series. It also gives context to some of the narrative and characters that you could find in the Mafia of the old country.
