'Faster than people think' – Wayne Rooney names ex-Manchester United star who was faster than Cristiano Ronaldo but slower than him

Wayne Rooney has claimed former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves was faster than Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo was regarded as one of the fastest players in the world during his prime, especially when he was a young player at Old Trafford.

However, Wayne Rooney has claimed that he himself was the fastest player in 30-yard tests in training. He also insisted that it was Owen Hargreaves who came second to Cristiano Ronaldo. Rooney told BBC Sport, as quoted Football TBR:

“We had tests over 30 yards, I think it was. And I was leading in that. Owen Hargreaves was actually second. Yeah, Owen was quicker than people think. So yes, I was quicker than that. But there are different aspects to football.”

Earlier, Rio Ferdinand also acknowledged Hargreaves' pace and claimed the former England midfielder was actually the fastest player in all of Tests. He told Rio Ferdinand Presents in 2024, via TBR Football:

“He came into the training ground when he signed and we did trials and he blew everyone out of the water. He blew everyone away – he used to do like 10 yards, 20 yards and he won every race. Wayne Rooney used to say to him 'Who's playing with the machine? Owen can't be the fastest!'”

Manchester United had a wealth of talented footballers on the pitch under Sir Alex Ferguson. Cristiano Ronaldo spent six seasons at the club before making a world record £80m move Real Madrid in 2009.

Owen Hargreaves joined Manchester United in 2007 and spent four seasons at the club, but his time was blighted by injuries. He made just 39 appearances for the club and shared the pitch Cristiano Ronaldo on 29 occasions. He played 50 games there Wayne Rooney per club and country in total.

The former Manchester United star reveals 2 big goals that Cristiano Ronaldo will want to achieve before his retirement

Former Manchester United full-back Danny Simpson believe Cristiano Ronaldo has two goals before deciding to hang up his boots. He has claimed that the Portuguese superstar probably wants to score 1,000 goals in his career and also share the pitch with his son.

Simpson has told GOAL that he believes Ronaldo will extend his deal with Al-Nassr and will continue to play until he achieves his remaining two goals. The former Manchester United defender said:

“I don't think you can write him off. As long as he scores goals, as long as he doesn't get injured, I'm not surprised because it's him. I know he wants 1,000 goals. And I think he wants to play with his son.”

He added:

“Playing with your son, that's probably one of the biggest goals you can achieve once you've won everything. Sharing a pitch with your son has to be a feeling. You look at those goals. He sets goals and you look at them: 1,000 goals and he plays with his son, he does them and thinks 'right, I've done it all now'? What he's done for the game is incredible.”

Cristiano Ronaldo is 40 years old and has 950 career goals to his name, while his son is 15 years old. Ronaldo Junior plays for Al-Nassr's youth team and also made his debut with Portugal's under-16 national team.
