Giants GM Joe Schoen on the defensive over firing Brian Daboll amid job security question

New York Giants General manager Joe Schoen was questioned about why he was still in the organization despite coming with Brian Daboll. The coach was fired in mid-November, ending his tenure with a 20-40-1 record in three and a half seasons with the “Big Blue.”

During a press conference Tuesday, Schoen was asked why he still had a job while Daboll was out of the team. He got defensive and put the onus on the property.

“Yes, I understand the question,” Schoen said. “Again … my hand is the same as (Daboll's). Ownership made the decision to move forward. I'm going to do what I can to control what I can control, and that's supporting (interim head coach Mike Kafka) moving forward. I wish (Daboll) nothing but the best and we're going to do everything we can to get this franchise back to where it should be.”

Following the firing of Brian Daboll and Shane Bowen, many fans have called for Joe Schoen to be relieved of his duties. The Giants have shown potential in the 2025 season, but their 2-9 record after Monday's 33-15 loss to the New England Patriots tells a different story.

The rookie quarterback Jackson Dart has been the brightest spot for the Giants this season, but several late collapses have shown they're still not ready to contend.

Joe Schoen explains plans to find new Giants HC

Joe Schoen discussed the Giants' plans to find Brian Daboll's successor. He noted that their job is to help interim coach Mike Kafka succeed, and when the time comes, they'll do their due diligence.

“We're going to do everything we can right now to support (Mike) Kafka, that's our main goal,” Schoen said. “At the appropriate time, we will enter into potential coaches, investigate and conduct a thorough and collaborative investigation and find the best coach to lead the New York Giants through the 2026 season.”

The Giants have a group of young players who can compete for many years at Dart, runner Cam Tax Housereceiver Malik Nabers and linebacker Abdul Carter.

If they stay healthy and the team builds around them, the Giants will likely have a shot at the Super Bowl at some point. They are eliminated from the playoffs and many fans are already thinking about next season.
