“I didn't try to help Novak Djokovic for me”


Andre Agassi first ventured into training with Novak Djokovic, and although his association was short, he was one of the most important collaborations in tennis. Later, Agassi opened about his feelings during his time training the Serb and explained what initially motivated him to take on the role.

Agassi officially started working with Djokovic in 2017, just ahead of the Open in France. What began as an experimental collaboration was finally extended to 2018, marking the first major coaching role of Agassi in the ATP Tour.

However, due to the differences of opinion, especially in terms of the options and mentality of the Serbian team, the American and separated in March 2018. During its time together, the SERB managed to win only one title, at the Eastbourne International 2017.

During an interview from 2021 with CNBC TV18, Other Agassi He shared that his decision to train Novak Djokovic was a desire to return to the sport he had given so much. Explained:

“First of all, you need to ensure your intentions to be altruistic,” he said. “He was not helping him or trying to help him, he should say, for me. My reasons were that he believed it was better for tennis if he could somehow get the best of himself and then know him and his family, he wanted to help.”

Grand Slam's eight stroke added:

“We often agreed not to disagree, and it is also good, there is no judgment. But, passing to the side, he was able to process many things that we happened together and, in hope, made him better for it.”

Although Djokovic did not win a great slam during his time with Agassi, he claimed 11 seniors after his collaboration ended, marking one of the most ruling sections of his career.

After his division with Andre Agassi, Novak Djokovic openly shared his thoughts about his time together. Speaking to the masters of Monte-Carlo in 2018, he clarified that there was no formal contract between them, so there was nothing official to finish.

Djokovic thanked Agassi, thanking him not only for his tennis views, but also for the valuable life lessons he shared during his association.

“We had no contract: he was not working with me officially,” said the Serb. “He was helping me, he really wanted to help and give me advice and share his experience with me and that speaks enough of him as a person.”

“He is someone who always admired as a player and person. The last eight, nine months with Andre was incredible. The amount of things I learned, not only of tennis, but also of life in general, and that is why I am very grateful,” he added.

The 24 -time champion Grand Slam continued:

“I just thank Andre for what he has done for me during the last year.

After completing his collaboration with Djokovic, Andre Agassi went to Mentor Grigor Dimitrov from 2018 to 2020.In the following years, guided players such as Sebastian Korda and Marcos Girona were sometimes detected, although he did not take on a formal role of coach with neither.
