Top seed Learner Tien will face Martin Landaluce in the group stage of the Next Gen ATP Finals 2025.
Tien faced Rafael Jodar in his first match of the first leg. The American started quickly, claiming the first set from the loss of just one game. His failure to close out the second set proved costly as Jodar gave him a goal in the tie-break to level proceedings.
Tien captured the third set decisively, dropping just one game. Jodar fought back once again to take the fourth set. The American got a break in the deciding set and had a match point on his own serve, which he failed to convert. He also dropped three more match points on Jodar’s serve. The latter had the last laugh in the tie-break, completing a 1-4, 4-3 (3), 1-4, 4-2, 4-3 (4) comeback win.
Landaluce faced Nikolai Budkov Kjaer in their first match of the group stage. The Spaniard overcame himself in the first set with ease only to lose it. However, he saved a set point in the second set tie-break to take the set.
Landaluce found himself on his back after losing the third set. He had a chance to extend the match in the fourth set. However, he squandered a break lead and a 4-1 lead in the tie-break to lose the match 4-1, 3-4 (7), 4-2, 4-3 (4).
This will be the first meeting between them, so the head-to-head is currently at 0-0.
(Odds via BetMGM)

Tien will be ruining the match points lost in his previous match. As the only top 100 player in the field, he was the odds-on favorite to win it all. Now, their campaign will depend on whether or not they win against Landaluce. He won 69 percent of his first serve points against Jodar and hit 20 winners compared to 35 unforced errors.
Landaluce had beaten Budkov Kjaer three times this year in their Challenger-level matches. However, the Spaniard had no answers to his opponent’s tactics on this occasion. She won 72 percent of her first serve points and hit 15 winners against 38 unforced errors.
Given the wide gulf in his achievements, Tien will be the favorite to win this contest. The American is in the top 30 with one ATP title to his name, while Landaluce has yet to break into the top 100. The Spaniard could take a leaf out of compatriot Jodar’s book and write an upset, but that seems unlikely given his erratic performance in the previous game.
choose: Student Tien will win in four sets.
Advice 1: Student Tien to win.
Tip 2: The match will have at least 24 matches.
