Austin Reaves opened the scoring for the Lakers with a floater and later hit a 24-foot 3-pointer midway through the first quarter. He finished the night with 21 points.
The Lakers trailed 67-49 at halftime after allowing the Rockets to explode for 31 points in the second quarter.
James took over in the third quarter, scoring 14 of his 21 points as the Lakers came back with a 40-24 run to close the gap.
The Lakers pulled within two points on James with eight seconds left, but their comeback attempt fell short as the Rockets closed the game at the free throw line in the final moments.
On Tuesday, the Lakers will aim for redemption as they take on the Dallas Mavericks, who are determined to end their four-game losing streak.
