Netflix launched two new strange things Season 5 character posters featuring Sadie Sink's Max Mayfield and Jamie Campbell Bower's Vecna, two of the show's biggest characters. Volume 2 was teased with these posters.
Fans now have a glimpse of what these characters will face in the upcoming episodes. The posters reveal Max trapped in Vecna's nightmare realm, Camazotz, and the return of Vecna in his ominous new form.
The New History of Russia in Volume 2 of strange things season 5
In an exclusive interview with Variety on November 29, 2025, Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators of strange things season 5, provided intriguing details about the upcoming volume 2. A key revelation was the introduction of the “new history of Russia,” which will play a crucial role in the final episodes. Matt said:
“Yeah, that's what we're calling our new Russia story, because it's very few characters. They're kind of isolated on their own, Max and Holly. We're really happy with how it integrates with the other stories.”
The plot focuses on Jim Hopper, who is in a Russian prison. Volume 2 shows his escape from the Russian soldiers and his struggles. The Duffers said this story will tie into previous events, providing context for the series' climax.

The Duffer brothers confirmed that this subplot would feature few characters. However, it will be crucial to the tale. Max and Holly's journey to Camazotz, Vecna's nightmarish prison, will be crucial as Jim Hopper fights for his freedom. strange things Season 5 should bring these stories together. Soon, Max and others will help escape Vecna's terrible plan and Russia's narrative.
In the same interview, the Duffers also teased the eventual showdown with Vecna. They revealed that Volume 2 will bring back many of the questions and mysteries that have lingered from the early seasons of strange things.
Max and Vecna's mental prison
Recently released character posters for Sadie Sink's Max Mayfield and Jamie Campbell Bower's Vecna give fans a closer look at the psychological battle brewing in strange things season 5. Jamie Campbell Bower told Variety about Vecna's new look,
“This season was definitely more of a mix between practical and CG. On a practical level, the face is all prosthetics, the shoulders are prosthetics, the hands are prosthetics, but everything else is a morph suit.”
On the other hand, Max is trapped in Vecna's mental prison, where he must fight to regain control of his mind. Her new poster shows her battling Camazotz, a twisted version of Hawkins, with the ominous figure of Vecna hovering over her.
Max's situation coincides with his dire situation. Despite being in a coma, he struggles to escape Vecna's mental captivity. Sadie Sink's portrayal of Max's struggle with mental darkness will likely dominate Volume 2's Camazotz story.
Meanwhile, the return of Vecna in his true form of Mr. Whatsit, a previously hidden appearance, is a key element that will influence Max's fate.

Will Max escape Vecna's clutches?
Max's fight to escape Vecna's control will be a central plot point in volume 2. As revealed in the teaser materials, the episode titled “Escape from Camazotz” will feature Max's effort to break Holly Wheeler and other captured children out of Vecna's mental prison.
Also, the mystery surrounding Vecna's ultimate goal continues to unfold. He has long tried to reshape the world using children as his “perfect vessels”.
This sinister goal will be further explored in Volume 2, with more information on how Max's power and determination could thwart his plans. As Max works to break free, his allies, including Eleven and Will, will likely join forces to face Vecna and her forces in a final battle.
