Even in the midst of a tumultuous season so far, Max Versappen continues to enjoy the sport he has dominated for years. The Red Bull driver is 69 points behind the Oscar Piastri leader, but remains positive in the middle of the season.
After four consecutive campaigns of the championship, Verstapen has an unusually submitted year. In front of the Belgium Grand Prix weekend, Versappen is in the third place in the standings, after having won twice this season, his last victory arrives almost two months ago at GP Emilia-Romagna.
But when he asks The New York Times Whether you still had fun despite the circumstances, Verstappen said:
“I am having fun enough. Yes. Some bits are not fun, but the most important thing I enjoy is driving the car. And that's fun.”
Max verstappen The Red Bull Racing Line of Life is maintained, marking 165 of the 172 points of the team. But he has not won consistent victories, especially with Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris Soaring in McLaren. It is currently in the third place in the standings, 61 points behind Norris in P2, with the air of invincibility that led to 2021 to 2024 seemingly dissolved.
RB21 is a shadow of its predecessor, sometimes fast, but often unpredictable. Yuki Tsunoda, who was called to replace Liam Lawson earlier this year, has struggled to combine its coherence, marking only seven points since its Red Bull promotion. Outside the court, the team is experiencing a seismic change in leadership after July 9 Departure of the director of the long -term team, Christian Horner.
Verstappen explained the reason for his joy:
“Working with all the incredibly talented and smart people on the team, pushing -in the car to get the most out of the game and the competition, of course, with all the other drivers. Just trying to win at the end of the day. Of course, if you really do not have the opportunity to win and I have to drive in the midfield, the fun will disappear very quickly.”
For now, the fun hangs on a thread.
Max Verstappen enters Spa Francorchamps during one of the most dramatic transitions of the Red Bull Racing Camp in years. After more than two decades, Christian Horner has abandoned his role as director of the team. His term defined the two golden times of Red Bull with Sebastian Vettel (2009-13) and Verstapen (2021-24).
Laurent Mekies will officially assume the control of the Belgian Grand Prix hereinafter. Formerly with Racing Bulls and Ferrari, he inherits a team of Red Bull in transition. McLaren has increased, Mercedes reappears and Ferrari is still a threat on good days. The team is currently in fourth place in the building championship, going back McLaren by 288 points.
But Verstappen welcomes the change.
“I returned to the factory last week to spend some time on the SIM with the team. I want to work closely with Laurent,” he said f1.
Verstappen has never led a F1 season Without a hornner directing the dress. As Red Bull prepares for a new era, Verstapen now faces the double challenge of adapting to Mekies and to act at a high level.
Looking forward to Spa-Francorchamps, a track where it is a Belgian half, he feels especially at home, he seems ready to regroup. With the title more and farther, the next phase of the identity of Red Bull begins here.
Mekies, meanwhile, has already begun to shape its new environment, with Verstapen and Tsunoda, reiterating the need for internal focus.
But for the first time in years, Max Versappen does not pursue perfection. Pursues balance. And by 2025, this can be the hardest race.
