Max Verstappen makes first bold claim about title chances after sweeping US F1 GP


Max Verstappen made a bold statement about the 2025 drivers' championship after the United States Grand Prix on Sunday, saying he certainly has a chance of winning the title at the end of the season. The Dutchman took his fifth win of the season as he continued to put pressure on McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

Verstappen came home from pole position to see the checkered flag first at the US GP on Sunday to move within 40 points of championship leader Oscar Piastri with five rounds of the season to go. It also narrowed the gap Lando Norris to just 26 now, after the Briton's second place finish in Austin.

Speaking to Martin Brundle after the race, Verstappen said he has a real shot at a fifth world title at the end of the season.

“Yeah, sure, the opportunity is there. We just have to try to deliver these weekends until the end. So, yeah, we're going to try as hard as we can. I'm really excited until the end,” he said.

Just four races ago, Max Verstappen's deficit to Oscar Piastri in the drivers' standings he had moved to more than 100 points. Since then, the 28-year-old has taken three race wins out of four and a sprint win to go with it.

Recent aerodynamic upgrades to Red Bull's car have brought the RB21's performance much closer to McLaren, with challenger Papaya reaching a standstill as the team shifts its focus to 2026. Although McLaren are already the constructors' champions, the race for the drivers' title is now well underway.

Max Verstappen said he and Red Bull must be “perfect” for the rest of the season to have a chance of winning the 2025 drivers' title. The four-time world champion added that even if he doesn't win the prize, he will know he tried and kept the title fight exciting until the end.

talking with F1 TV after the US GP on Sunday, Verstappen said:

“We are having some very good weekends. Of course, we also know that we have to be perfect until the end of the season to have a chance (to win the title).”

“But we'll try. If we do, of course (it would be) amazing. If we don't, we tried everything we could until the end and kept it exciting. I think that's the spirit for us. It's positive pressure,” he added.

Next up is the Mexico City GP, which has been a happy hunting ground for Verstappen, where the Red Bull driver has won five times. It remains to be seen whether he can continue his end-of-season title run with another win at the Hermanos Rodríguez Raceway, further increasing the pressure on the McLaren duo
