Mets analyst points to major roadblock to Fernando Tatis Jr.'s trade hopes

Fernando Tatis Jr. enjoyed a solid campaign for the San Diego Padres in 2025. Finishing the regular season with a .268 batting average, 25 home runs and 71 RBI, while playing excellent defense in right field, the Dominican played a starring role in helping the Friars reach the playoffs.

Despite being one of the most influential players on his team, Tatis could be traded this winter as the Padres are going through a possible ownership change.

Several franchises have been reported to be interested in acquiring the three-time All-Star, one of them being the New York Mets. As Marc Luino explained during Wednesday's episode of the “Mets'd Up Podcast,” however, daddies may remain a dream for Mets fans.

“If Fernando Tatis Jr. is available, that's my number one,” Luino said. (15:53) “That's who I want the Mets to get in. I like him better than Kyle Tucker, especially with the fit on this team. But he probably won't be available.

“I don't know how real he's available. Like you said, (Padres GM) AJ Preller seems like a real X-factor here, until he's gone, I don't think there's ever going to be a world where he's selling like that.”

The Mets' cross-town rivals are also interested in trading for Fernando Tatis Jr.

Along with the Mets, the New York Yankees They are also reported to be exploring the possibility of acquiring Fernando Tatis Jr. this winter broadcaster Michael Kay had his say on the matterduring the Nov. 21 episode of “The Michael Kay Show.”

“That type of player would play a lot in New York,” Kay said. “He'd be amazing. He'd be a huge star. I know he's had his PED issues. And if he gets hit again with a PED issue, you're kind of out of contract, right?

“Now, you can say, 'Well, we're giving up a lot of people, and we're one bad test away from maybe being out of contract.' You can take that opportunity because he's been outstanding since he got hit with the PED charge.”
