NFL insider reveals QB’s $46.1 million contract deal with Colts ‘up in the air’ after Achilles injury

The Colts’ quarterback situation took a major turn Sunday when Daniel Jones suffered a torn right Achilles during a 36-19 loss to the Jaguars. He was expected to receive a big contract after his strong start to the season, but the injury changes things for him and the franchise.

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell offered an assessment of how Jones’ injury would affect his market value and contract options with Indianapolis.

“The Colts would certainly bring Jones back in 2026 after the end of his one-year contract, either using the franchise tag or signing him to a new contract.” Barnwell he wrote on Monday “These negotiations suddenly seem more difficult for all parties involved.

“The 28-year-old was looking for at least $46 million more in guaranteed franchise tag money, if not more in a long-term deal. Now, that’s up in the air. The Colts could get creative and offer Jones something less to try to find common ground in a deal, but that could allow Jones to hit the open market.”

The Colts would likely be hesitant to commit a $46.1 million franchise tag to Jones if his availability for next season is unclear.

He completed 261 of 384 passes for 3,101 yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 13 games.

Daniel Jones’ injury against Jaguars

Daniel Jones injury it came with 35 seconds left in the first quarter while trying to avoid defensive pressure. He planted his foot to throw a pass but went down, grabbing the back of his right leg. Colts backup quarterback Riley Leonard took over under center, completing 18 of 29 passes for 145 yards and an interception.

Indianapolis coach Shane Steichen addressed the media after Sunday’s loss and shared an update on Jones’ injury.

“It doesn’t look good,” Steichen said. “Anytime you lose a guy that puts in so much work and so much effort, and he’s always there for his team, he shows up with a fibula injury, and he goes out and plays, so much respect for him. So much respect.”

Jones was already playing through a fractured left fibula when the non-contact injury occurred. He repeatedly slammed his helmet on the ground in frustration. Jones was able to walk to the locker room, but he probably knew the damage was already done.
