NHL fans on social media reacted as Philadelphia Flyers acquired the defender Roman Schmidt from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for defenseman Ethan Samson on Monday.
The deal was a straight trade of AHL prospects, with the goal of bolstering the Flyers’ defensive depth with more physicality. Schmidt has appeared in 13 games for the Lightning’s AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch, recording one assist and a team-leading 38 penalty minutes.
Following the trade, Roman Schmidt was assigned to the Philadelphia Flyers’ AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
Here’s how fans of X (formerly called Twitter) reacted to the deal. One tweeted:
“This is not Quinn Hughes.”
another he entered:
“Personally, the size for a potential trade, I think the Lightning won this trade, but they’re both young, so really only time will tell who wins this trade.”
Here are some of the other top reactions to X:
“Any chance Roman Schmidt is a Hughes brother?” wrote a third fan.
“BOOM WHAT A BLOCKBUSTER LOL” another user X has posted.
“If his middle name is Jack, it could be epic! The announcers can say Roman ‘Jack’ Schmidt with a goal! Iykyk,” wrote another.
“I liked Samson. Decent defenseman with offensive potential to step up to the play. Interesting trade. Same age, both right-handed, but Roman Schmidt is 6’5″ vs. 6’1 Samson. Don’t know much about his game, though. #LVPhantoms D core has already changed a lot this season.” another entered.
Roman Schmidt was selected 96th overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2021 NHL Draft. The 6-foot-5 defenseman has three goals and seven points in 63 career AHL games.
On Saturday, the Philadelphia Flyers lost 3-2 Colorado Avalanche at the Wells Fargo Center. The Flyers are sixth in the Metro Division with a record of 15-9-3.
