Spiranac revealed that, being a gymnast, she was comfortable in spandex clothing. She also explained that when she switched to golf, she couldn't afford to buy high-priced golf outfits and completely change her wardrobe. His words were (via NY Post):

“I was a gymnast before I switched to golf. I was very comfortable in spandex and very little because that's what you wear when you're wearing a leotard and you're competing. When I switched to golf, we were struggling a little bit financially, so I didn't have the luxury of going out and buying a whole new golf shirt, which was so close, and so appropriate for my golf. Training clothes are how I learned to play the game.”

Paige Spiranac went on to explain how people in the golf world judged whether an outfit included shorts or pants, or a leaf collar or a true collar. She added that when people with that mindset saw her in spandex, they judged her. He ended by stating that fashion was a big part of golf and that it was going in the right direction.
