Path of Exile Foulborn Items explained


Foulborn items in Path of Exile are an alternate version of items with different modifiers than their regular counterparts. For now, there are only unique items and Foulborn currency in the game. The only way to get one is through the Genesis tree, introduced in the Keepers of the Flame update.

A Foulborn item works similarly to its regular variant, but can completely change your playstyle. Here's everything you need to know about them.

Foulborn's unique items have their modifier altered, which may force you to make some changes to your build. By default, a Foulborn item only has one different modifier, but with “Extremely Foul” Notable, you can have the chance to have multiple alternate modifiers on a single one. The process may change how it works, but you may end up stronger.

For example, the image above shows the same single loop, but both have a different modifier written in purple. These are bad mods and can alter the way you play.

As for the Foulborn coin, they act the same as normal coins, but have a higher chance of adding higher level modifiers to an item. If you're coming from Path of Exile 2, think of them as larger or perfect orbs. Note that getting low level modifiers is still a possibility.

There are three Foulborn Coins:

  • Foulborn Augmentation Orb: Augments a magic item with a new random modifier, with higher level modifiers more likely.
  • Foulborn Gift Orb: Upgrades a magic item to a rare item, with higher level modifiers more likely.
  • Exalted Orb of Foulborn: Increases a rare item with a new random modifier, with higher level modifiers more likely.

Using the Foulborn currency, you can turn higher level items into some nice basic items and then take them to the bench to further modify or trade with other players.

To create a Foulborn item, you will need access to the Genesis tree. There, you can find a Unique Item Womb that requires an Ancient Womb Gift to craft unique items, or a Coin Item Womb that uses a Luxurious Womb Gift to generate coins. Aside from the Wombgifts, you'll also need to feed Graftblood to the Genesis tree to complete the process. By completing the breach encounters with the campaign and the end game, you will have enough of each resource to continue printing Foulborn coins and uniques.
