Charlie Kirk's wife, Erika Kirk, recently gave an interview at The New York Times' Dealbook Summit. The conversation between Andrew Ross Sorkin and the TPUSA CEO was broadcast live on December 3rd interviewErika Kirk shared a series of memories about her late husband. During the conversation, Sorkin discussed “gun violence in America” with Charlie Kirk's widow.
Pop culture podcaster Perez Hilton covered this conversation on December 4th blog. At one point in the interview, Sorkin said that Charlie Kirk strongly supported the Second Amendment. Noting this, he solicited Erika Kirk's thoughts on gun violence, especially when her husband was publicly shot.
The new president of TPUSA endorsed the Second Amendment and opined that the main cause of violence was mental problems. Hilton quoted the remarks of Erika Kirk, who said:
“What I've realized through all of this is that you can have individuals who will always resort to violence. And what I fear is that we're living in a day and age where they think violence is the solution because they don't want to hear a different point of view. This is not a gun problem, it's a human problem, deeply human. This is a very mental problem, it's a very deep problem.”
However, Perez Hilton challenged Erika Kirk's thoughts and suggested otherwise. He added that he was not surprised by the TPUSA president's statement “given her beliefs.” While placing equal importance on mental health, Hilton commented that the gun safety movement focused on “minimizing the likelihood.”
“It's about saving as many lives as possible, and it is no about taking out the weapons. It's about safety and common sense. Prevention, people! Prevention is important and you can worry about both mental health issues and gun safety. They are not mutually exclusive,” Hilton commented.
In the interview, Charlie KirkThe woman said she was aware of the mental health issue. She noted that the late activist promoted discussion of this issue at TPUSA college events.
For the uninitiated, at Charlie Kirk's memorial, his wife extended pardon to Kirk's murderer. In Wednesday's interview, she recalled the moment and said her husband would have forgiven, too. He emphasized that forgiveness was not a sign of weakness. Kirk's wife added that it also didn't mean she believed what the killer had done was acceptable.
The host said he imagined Erika Kirk she must have been full of rage and emotion when she came by and asked him if she had written that speech herself. Charlie Kirk's wife said that while she had prepared her speech, she left the forgiveness part “open-ended” and didn't plan what to say.
“I specifically left that part open. If you look at my speech notes, that part I prayed about way before, and it was a game moment, an exact second-to-second moment. This was not a pre-planned thing. It wasn't because I'm not going to say something that I don't really believe,” he said.
She continued,
“And when I prayed about it, I knew the Lord would really press it into my heart. And if I had to say it because I really thought it and believed it, then I was going to say it. But I wasn't going to plan it beforehand.”
Days after Charlie Kirk's murder, TPUSA's board unanimously named his wife as the organization's new CEO. Before the aforementioned interview, Erika Kirk had recently spoken with Megyn Kellywhere she remembered her husband.
