Real Madrid right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has insisted he will not celebrate if he scores against his former club Liverpool. The two European giants will meet in the UEFA Champions League at Anfield on Tuesday 4 November.
Alexander-Arnold plied his trade with the Reds for 21 years, joining the club as a youngster in 2004. The 27-year-old made his Liverpool debut in 2016 and established himself as one of the best right-backs of all time. He scored 23 goals and provided 92 assists in 354 appearances in all competitions, helping the club win eight trophies, including two Premier League titles.
However, the England international controversially canceled his contract last season and joined Real Madrid on a six-year deal on May 30 for a fee of €10 million. This led to many Liverpool fans hit out at Alexander-Arnold on social media, and the latter could face a hostile reception at Anfield on Tuesday.
Alexander-Arnold said Amazon Prime (via METRO):
“I haven't thought that far ahead, but no, if I had to score I wouldn't celebrate. It will be a little different going into the dressing room outside and warming up on the other side of the pitch. Everything will feel very different to me, but it's all part of the game.”
The Real Madrid star also insisted that the reception he receives would not change his feelings towards the Reds:
“However I am received is the decision of the fans. I will always love the club, I will always be a fan of the club and I will be grateful for the opportunity and the things we have achieved together. Regardless of what my feelings towards Liverpool will not change, I have memories that will last me a lifetime and that will not change however I am received.”
Alexandre-Arnold he has struggled to get going for Los Blancos this season, making just five appearances and playing a total of 156 minutes. Notably, he missed five games with a hamstring injury.
Trent Alexander-Arnold has insisted Liverpool are still a “top level football team” and that Real Madrid they do not take them lightly. Despite a 2-0 win over Aston Villa (November 1), the Reds have struggled in recent weeks, losing six of their last eight games across competitions.
From the aforementioned interview, Alexander-Arnold stated:
“Having played with the boys and under the manager, I understand how strong a team they are. Even though they haven't had the results of late, they're still a top football team and nobody here thinks it's going to be an easy game.”
Real Madrid is currently fifth Champions League table with nine points from their three games to date, while Liverpool are 10th with six points. However, the latter remarkably defeated Los Blancos 2-0 in their group stage encounter last season (27 November 2024), through goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo.
