The race for the Chicago Bears head-coaching job is reportedly between two candidates.
Pa cow, Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reported that Mike McCarthy and Ben Johnson are in a “two-horse race” to get the gig. Schultz also suggested that Ryan Flores could remain in the mix if he “blows” the Bears.
“For all the major reasons, the Chicago job, it's a two-horse race between Mike McCarthy and Ben Johnson,” Schultz said. “I think if Ryan Flores comes in and makes them happy, then he's still in that mix. But right now, I think McCarthy and I think Ben Johnson are the two leading the way for Chicago.”
Flores, the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, has not yet spoken to Chicago but will do so on Saturday, according to NFL Network's. Ian Rapoport.
According to Schultz, the Bears are looking for a head offensive coach to help quarterback Caleb Williams, although the rookie will have no say in who is named head coach.
Chicago could get an offensive mind coach for both McCarthy and Johnson.
Except for the 2024 season, McCarthy's Cowboys have consistently finished near the top in points per game, including in 2021 when they led the NFL with 31.2 points per game. Of course, some of that success could be due to Dak Prescott being the star, but the Bears are hoping Williams can thrive in a game that could be led by McCarthy.
Schultz saw McCarthy's history of producing quarterbacks like Prescott and Aaron Rodgers as the reason for Chicago's interest in him.
Johnson has helped rebuild Detroit, and the Lions' success over the past few years has been fueled by their offense. This season, Detroit had the second most yards per game and led the league in yards per game at 33.2.
