Snappchat to tell 440,000 people in Australia to prove they are 16 or accounts will be closed for social media | EASY THINGS

Snapchat is about to start notifying some users that their accounts will be disabled when the Australian Social Media Network takes over from December 10.

Users of the platform who are under the age of 16 must start registering for the ban this week in-app, via email or SMS.

Snapchat uses identifiers based on account activity to calculate age, in addition to those who self-identified as under 16, to create a pool of affected stories.

If snapchat flags the user as 16 years old, but they are not, they will use measures to encourage them to stay on the platform. Users will be prompted to “Verify your age” in the app to start.

Age can be verified by an Australian bank account, by looking at Government ID such as a passport or driver's licence, or through a certain age. The latter requires users to self-verify the scanners using technology provided by the Age K-ID verification company.

Users under the age of 16 will be given the opportunity before 10 December to download data such as files, memories and videos. Their accounts will be closed from 10 December until the user turns 16 and chooses to renew their account by verifying their age.

Accounts that are closed for more than three years and are not verified will be deleted.

Snapchat is arguing that it should be covered by the ban – it's about Snapchat's original content and messaging, which is protected – but it will agree to the ban.

“Snapchat is and has always been an open app, primarily used to connect with your closest friends,” said a spokesperson.

“We know that for young people, those who help are also very helpful in being happy and being sad and they are disappointed that young people can no longer connect with SnappSchat.

“However, even if we fully agree with the government's review … We will ban accounts for users under 16 from December 10.”

Snap is the second platform to announce how the ban will be implemented, after Facebook and Instagram Commuteni Shaved last week started warning users.

Tiktok and push said that they will follow the ban but do not talk about what they will do to achieve it.
