Wandering Tale of the Trial of the Great Hero

Great Hero's Trial is one of the first wandering tales you encounter in Where Winds Meet. It is very close to the starting area of the game, near the eastern shores of Bamboo Adobe. Like all wandering tales, there is no objective point to get you the solution; you must identify and assist yourself at all stages of the research.

If that side quest at the start of the game left you stumped, this guide will break it down for you.

To start the Great Hero Trial story, start from the Bamboo Adobe waypoint, then walk east until you see a waterfall. You'll have to jump down to reach the low ground (you can use Mighty Drop to mitigate damage during this), and then you'll find an ancient shrine in the shadow of the cliffs, located to your left when you look at the waterfall.

A boy named Rongrong will be standing inside the shrine. Talk to her to start the quest, which basically gives you three clues to complete three tests.

The three check boxes to check the wandering tale of the great hero test are simple: you must fell the thickest tree, hunt the tallest bird and climb the tower without a ladder. All of the objectives can be located relatively close to the shrine, but if you want to jump ahead and complete the story right away, here's what you need to do for each one.

How to cut the thickest tree

Starting from the shrine, look to the left (toward the waterfall) and look for a larger tree other than a bamboo. There's only one in the area, so it's easy to spot. Just walk up to him and hit him a few times to drop it and get the first tablet for the big hero test

Where to find the tallest bird

To kill the “highest bird”, you will need to reach the highest possible altitude in the Bamboo Abode area. While looking at the waterfall, look to your right, and look at the top of the highest cliff overlooking the forest. You will have to climb and walk there.

We've also marked the location on the map for this area, but really the easiest way to locate it is to climb past the waterfall and then look to your right to find the highest rock nearby. Note that it is a bit out of the way and not the long rock right next to the top of the waterfall.

Once there, you can Find a white bird flying nearby. Enter Still Waters mode with your bow for an easy kill. Loot the bird afterwards to get the second tablet.

The ladderless tower in question is an ordinary wooden lookout tower located nearby. Starting from the shrine, go right this time and follow the coast until you see the tower near a ruined house.

There is no ladder to the top, as you might have guessed. Instead, you can triple jump to a slightly stretching plank and then double jump to the top in two more. I did this without actually using the plank, because the tower edge collision detection is very forgiving.

Once you've completed all three tests, return to Rongrong and select the “Woman” option to deliver the test to him. Rewards for completing the Grand Hero Trial can be claimed from the Wandering Tales screen (accessible from the Journal menu):

  • 40 Echo Jade
  • 10 Qinghe Exploration Points
  • 5000 EXP
  • 5000 coins of five dynasties

You don't really get a secret Tom as promised, and we didn't find a secret ending that immediately leads to it. Instead, it's a bunch of generic goodies to make another exploration activity.

However, it can potentially lead to future wandering tales or side quests for this so-called take secret. If I find it in my game of Where Winds Meet, I'll update this article.

Until then, here are some other Where the Winds Meet guides:
