Why the 2025 Snowball Derby is being moved to Monday in one of its most chaotic weeks yet

This year’s Snowball Derby, originally scheduled for Sunday, December 7th, has been moved up to Monday, December 8th. It started raining early Sunday and continued on and off throughout the afternoon. Soon, Five Flags Speedway officials made the call to postpone the race.

It should be noted that this is the second time in the past four years that the annual Snowball Derby has been postponed. Several NASCAR drivers, including Ryan Preece and two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Buschis expected to enter what will be the 58th running of the Super Late Model crown jewel.

FloRacing’s Rob Blount reported the postponement via X.

“We’re back with another unfortunate weather update,” Blount said, “As you can see behind me … look at all that fog up there. We are not hosting the 58th Annual Snowball Derby as scheduled on Sunday, December 7th. It will now be (on) Monday, December 8th with the green flag scheduled for 1:00pm CT.”

While Busch somehow managed to claw his way into the Last Chance Qualifying (LCQ), his Cup Series colleagues and fellow Snowball Derby contenders Noah Gragson and Erik Jones did not qualify for the main event. In fact, Gragson’s bid to win his second Tom Dawson Trophy ended before the LCQ even started.

Veteran driver Preston Peltier won the pole for the event after skipping it last year. He set an impressive lap of 16.240 seconds, which earned him his second career pole in the 300-lap final.

“He had a perfect car and a good crew,” he said. “All the pieces of the puzzle are here. I’ve never had a problem going fast for a couple of laps, but I’m trying not to get too excited. Let’s see how I feel after 300 (laps) on Sunday.”

Fans can watch the race live on FloRacing or stream it on Roku, Fire TV, Chromecast and Apple TV. The rest of the races that were previously scheduled for Monday will now be held on Tuesday, December 9.

NASCAR driver Erik Jones is ‘really disappointed’ after dismal Snowball Derby qualifying

NASCAR Cup Series regular Erik Jones, who drives the No. 43 Toyota Camry XSE for Legacy Motor Club full-time, will not enter Monday’s main event. Inclement weather made the track tricky, slippery and unpredictable, making it difficult for drivers to get their cars up to speed.

Jones announced that he took the same to X.

“Very disappointed we won’t be in the #SnowballDerby main show later today. We went out to qualify right after the caution and the track wasn’t there for the speed we had,” the rider wrote. “I tried to dig it out in the LCQ, but they ran out of laps with the shortened race. I hate the guys who came to help this week.”

Jones’ Snowball Derby teammate Noah Gragson was also forced out of contention due to unspecified mechanical issues with his car.
